FAQ for Meets

More general swim meet info is posted under the Home tab's "FAQ"

Does my swimmer have to warm up?

If they want to participate in the meet, then YES! Warming up decreases injuries and increases speed. This is why it is important to show up to the meets on time so you can get the proper warm up from your coaches. This is also good for an attendance check. Missing warm-ups may result in swimmers to be taken out of relays.

Why is my swimmer not on a relay?

This is the coach’s #1 dreaded question. VSA League Rules limit the number of heats that coaches may plan at a meet. Only 1 heat of relays may be swum per age group. Depending on the pool and meet set-up, this only enables 2-4 relays to swim. Some age groups have 40+ swimmers and it takes quite a few meets to rotate swimmers in relays to allow every child to have the opportunity to swim in a relay. Also, because of the meet scoring, the “A” and “B” relays will most often be created by the computer system by fastest times.

How do I label my swimmer's hand?

Write your swimmer's individual events on his or her right hand. Event number first, then the stroke, and the heat number, dash symbol, followed by the lane number. The swimmer below is swimming event #28, Freestyle (heat 4, lane 8) and event #35, Breaststroke (heat 2, lane 4).

Write your swimmer's relay event(s) on his or her left hand. Event number first, then the event initials, the lane number, dash symbol, followed by their order number. The swimmer below is swimming in event #13, the Medley Relay (heat 2, lane 4, breaststroke leg).

What should I write on my swimmers back?

Each swimmer should have the following written on their right shoulder:

RHCC

Last name, followed by first initial

Age Group

How do you write the events in "shorthand"?

FR = Freestyle

BR = Breaststroke

BK = Backstroke

FL = Butterfly

IM = Individual Medley

MR = Medley Relay

FR = Free Relay

What does the number mean after the heat and lane for a relay?

The number signifies in which order the swimmer will swim. For Freestyle Relay, "1" means the swimmer is swimming 1st, "2" means the swimmer is swimming 2nd, and so forth. For Medley Relay, "1" means the swimming is swimming backstroke, which is first. "2" means the swimmer is swimming breaststroke, which is second. "3" means the swimmer is swimming butterfly, which is third. And "4" means the swimmer is swimming freestyle, which is the fourth and last leg of the relay.

What is the order of a Medley Relay (MR)?

Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Freestyle

What is the order of an Individual Medley (IM)?

Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle
