What was your favorite thing about RHCC swimming?
SPIRIT!!! I lived for those Blackhawk v. Round Hill meets, the pre-county party shave downs, all the cheers, sharpie-ing my whole body at meets, always sporting red and black!! And also all the amazing people and coaches. A big part of my time at RHCC I remember, is hanging out at the pool after practice just eating lunch and playing cards for hours. Generally I would stay all the way from practice until I had a lesson just a few hours later. Some of my best memories of summer are still from spending my whole day at the pool with all my great swim friends!
How do you think RHCC swim team helped prepare you to swim for a year round USA swimming team?
It was the first time I became really driven about something. With the coaches always helping me set goals and pushing me to go faster, I found myself wanting to train harder, more, and not give up. This helped the transition into double practices and grueling workouts be just a little more bearable. I always looked forward to practices because they were fun, and the coaches were always encouraging me. I remember specifically when I would do 25's kick fast, the coaches would count out each second as I was coming in to the wall, and all I wanted to do was get to the wall so they would stop counting, so I pushed myself harder than ever to go faster. My kick is still the strongest part of my stroke, and I think a lot of that started from all those times they challenged me to go just a little bit faster, bit by bit.
Anything else you can add?
I am extremely glad I went year round at the time I did, so much later than everyone else on my team, because of all the years I spent on Round Hill. I have some of my best memories from those summers, and not much has ever topped them. Although I love everything about my team now, there was something special about all those meets where we would just spend the whole time getting pumped up for the relays, cheering on other people, getting decked out in red & black, and trying so hard to get those county times and team records! I can't imagine going year-round a year earlier, because I might not enjoy swimming half as much as I do now. Although year-round swimming got me much faster, RHCC was what started and kept strong my love for swimming.
Alanna Hulburd
Alanna also started her swimming career at Round Hill Country Club when she was 4 years old. She was part our team for 12 years, where she was a swimmer and a Jr. Coach. After her first year as a 15-18 where she placed 2nd in the 100 Breaststroke and 6th in the 100 Freestyle at the Contra Costa County swim meet, Alanna began swimming for the Crow Canyon Sharks. She will be attending Georgetown University in the fall of 2010 where she will be part of the Women's Swim Team! Great job Alanna!
